To experience lightness that may burn or disappear. To dialectically look at two sides of every emotion or thought. The opposites. Up, down. Expand, collapse. Internal, external. We experience and are physical and spiritual manifestations of imbalance and balance all at once. We all have both the “dark” and the “light” in us, it’s part of being human, and in the world outside of us. The Inspiration This body of work is inspired by the below passage, an excerpt from the Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo. “To be broken is no reason to see all things as broken. • • • Seldom seen, growing along the ocean floor, the white-plume anemone is a watery blossom. It is white lace opening under tons of black, opening as if bathed in the sun, while so far from the sun. This is the trick to staying well, isn’t it: to feel the sun even in the dark. To not lose the truth of things when they go out of view. To grow just the same. To know there is still water, even when we are thirsty. To know there is still love, even when we are lonely. To know there is still peace, even when we are suffering. FAQ Q: How do I start the process to commission a piece? A: A consultation is required and will be included as part of the commission cost—this determines the size, and color palette, includes a preliminary sketch (digital or hand sketch), and must be approved before work begins. Q: What style or design of paintings do you do? A: Primarily focused on grid-based work, with minimal color. But, color is an option, and so are various abstract expressionist styles — and we can discuss. A: This is one part co-creation, usually in the consultation meeting where we determine style, composition, any personal symbolism or meanings, and color. After the consultation, there is no art direction, &nbsp;and rarely input or involvement. From time to time, I will have questions for you along the way, but reserve the right of total creative freedom based on alignment to get started Q: I found a piece of yours I like, and I want something similiar. A: Primarily premium wood panels, but occasionally heavyweight canvas or archival paper. Few would attribute jet black (especially Vanta black, which stops all light reflection, the purest, darkest black paint) with love. But as a collective, the world experienced untold heartbreak and loss during the pandemic — and love became elemental to us all. Amidst the darkness of the world, we redefined it in our own ways. Around 2022 we started to recover or emerge. Light has slowly begun to come back. Over 100 people contributed words that come to mind when they thought of love... and those words became rich layers, in various levels of visibility in this piece — but symbolic of us all. Love is a tapestry of the human experience—it weaves us together. Love leads us from darkness. Experimentation was a must as many of the techniques I had used previously failed here due to the delamination of gold leaf and gold enamel... and led to many discoveries. As the technique was tested and confirmed to fail in one sense, I just leaned in and created a piece all it’s own without any attempts to avoid imperfection and failure. The “gold” is sometimes just that: finding beauty in imperfection, being okay with exactly what “is” in the moment, and without trying to change or control it. While productive to make color choices for a larger body of work these two studies yearned for further completion. After a long duration in storage they were accidentally stacked and created a beautiful horizon at the mid-vertical point, the meeting of sky and sea. I was instantly in love and fixed the two to become one 12x12” panel. The technical media exploration mixed with extreme temperatures for drying mediums yielded a stunning mix of black tones with sapphire undertones. The thematic exploration was inspired by presence deep in the ocean, looking up at the surface texture, with shimmering surface texture and light radiating downward. This very first painting will lay the groundwork for an entire future series dedicated to this paint application and its theme of looking up at the light from the depths.This painting is for sale. Mixing paints, materials, and solvents first led to mixing inorganic with organic materials, then further evolved to explore the effect on colors by chemicals. Soon, motifs began to emerge as the canvas flooded with liquids and solids, randomly pooling into circles, arcs, and directional movements. The thematic exploration equally evolved with the materials. Nearly complete, it sat (and sat and sat...) idle and unfinished for months. In September 2023, at the peak of the Full Moon of Pisces (or known as the “Cold Moon”), I walked back to the studio late at night to get something. But I was taken aback how the moon illuminated this painting in the most haunting way. “Luminous in the dark” are the only words to describe the effect. The moonlight inspired lunar-colored, cosmos-inspired line work, smudging and shading with charcoal and graphite softened the piece and gently brought it to completion. It symbolizes an alchemization of a person’s connection with the moon, tidal and lunar cycles, the flow of one’s emotion, and deep color change. As the piece morphs throughout the days’ and nights’ waxing and waning of light, every minute of every day shows new facets of color and shape. In the deep of the night it’s most luminous, with minimal light—hopefully from the moon.&nbsp;This painting is for sale.
